Explanation of significant variances compared with previous fiscal year
Total travel:
Compared to fiscal year 2018-2019, departmental travel expenditures decreased by $14.0 million in 2019-2020. The largest year-over-year reduction of $7.6 million is related directly to the 2018 G7 Leaders’ Summit in Charlevoix, Québec. The Summit was held in June 2018, which significantly drove up the travel expenditures in fiscal year 2018-2019. Additional travel decreases of $4.0M are found within the International Policing portfolio within Federal policing, due to the cyclical nature of the program whereby postings are renewed every 2-3 years, causing expenditures to spike in one year and decrease in subsequent years. The balance in travel reductions is spread across multiple programs.
Hospitality:
Compared to fiscal year 2018-2019, departmental hospitality expenditures decreased by $0.02 million in 2019-2020. This decrease relates primarily to the 2018 G7 Leaders’ Summit in Charlevoix, Québec held in June 2018.
Conference fees:
Compared to fiscal year 2018-2019, departmental conference fees decreased by $0.08 million in 2019-2020 in line with Government-wide efficiency initiatives.Minister and minister’s exempt staff - International travel:
