Grants and Contributions

About this information

In June 2016, as part of the Open Government Action Plan, the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat (TBS) committed to increasing the transparency and usefulness of grants and contribution data and subsequently launched the Guidelines on the Reporting of Grants and Contributions Awards, effective April 1, 2018.

The rules and principles governing government grants and contributions are outlined in the Treasury Board Policy on Transfer Payments. Transfer payments are transfers of money, goods, services or assets made from an appropriation to individuals, organizations or other levels of government, without the federal government directly receiving goods or services in return, but which may require the recipient to provide a report or other information subsequent to receiving payment. These expenditures are reported in the Public Accounts of Canada. The major types of transfer payments are grants, contributions and \'other transfer payments\'.

Included in this category, but not to be reported under proactive disclosure of awards, are (1) transfers to other levels of government such as Equalization payments as well as Canada Health and Social Transfer payments. (2) Grants and contributions reallocated or otherwise redistributed by the recipient to third parties; and (3) information that would normally be withheld under the Access to Information Act and the Privacy Act.

Development of Interband Cascade Lasers and a multi-gas sensing platform for air quality monitoring applications

Agreement Number:

1039891

Duration: from Mar 12, 2026 to Mar 31, 2028
Description:

ICLs are highly desirable for tunable laser gas sensing applications due to the strong absorptions of many gas species in the mid-IR region, making them ideal for compact laser gas sensors. In this collaborative research project, the mid-IR laser team at the NRC QN Research Centre (QNRC) will focus on developing ICL gain chips targeting 4.23 μm wavelength for CO2 sensing, while Norcada will carry out packaging and testing work to assess performance and support the ICL gain chip development work at QNRC.

A Joint Mid-IR and X-ray Investigation of the Physics Driving Sgr A*'s Flares

Agreement Number:

25JWGO4A01

Duration: from Feb 20, 2026 to Mar 31, 2028
Description:

This project aims to study flares from Sgr A*, the supermassive black hole at the center of the Milky Way, using JWST/MIRI and Chandra. By characterizing mid-IR spectral changes and X-ray emission, the observations will distinguish between flare models, probe accretion processes, and reveal the physical conditions near our closest supermassive black hole.
